A one-way door is the main tool used to get a possum out of a roof without pulling it out by hand. It is a small mesh tunnel with a hinged flap that gets fitted directly over the gap the possum is using to come and go, so the fix lines up with how the animal already moves around the house.
Once it is in place in a Wishart roof, the possum keeps to its usual pattern and leaves at night to feed in the garden as it normally would. The flap lets it push out easily, but swings shut behind it so it cannot push back through the same way. Over one or two nights the crew can usually tell whether the roof has been vacated, based on whether the flap keeps moving and whether the noise from inside the house has stopped.
The door stays up only as long as it needs to. Once the roof has been quiet for a couple of nights running, the crew comes back, takes the door down and seals the gap properly with mesh or capping that suits the roof.
